ABOUT DEHRADUN

Dehradun, one of the most important towns of the state of Uttar Pradesh, located at an altitude of 700 m, serves as the gateway to Mussoorie. The town lies in the Dun Valley, on the watershed of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. It derived its name from the camp ('Dehra' means camp) of Ram Rai, the son of Hari Rai, the 7th Sikh guru. Apparently, Ram Rai was not made guru after his father, and consequently, disputed the decision. Defeated, he came to Dun Valley, where he was accorded a warm welcome by the Garhwal Raja. In the latter half of the 17th century, Ram Rai established a gurudwara in the Jhanda Mohalla area, which still draws hordes of devotees.

During the British Raj, Dehradun was the summer base of the Viceroy's Bodyguard, and transformed into an educational centre and military cantonment. At present, it is also the base of the Indian Military Academy. Dehradun also boasts of the Forest Research Institute, dating back to the British Raj period, and the Wildlife Institute of India.

CLIMATE
Dehradun had a wonderful climate a few decades ago. In summer months it used to rain almost every evening and this kept the temperature cool. Incessant tree logging has severely damaged the local eco-system which has resulted in summers getting very hot. Earlier, homes in Dehradun, did not have fans but now air-conditioners are needed to keep cool during summer months.

This cave temple dedicated to lord Shiva is on the bank of a seasonal river made up of stalactite and stalagmite. Here on the Shivlingam, water drips from the top of a rock and hence the name tapkeshwar. It is connected by a regular bus service. On Shivaratri a big fair is held and devotees from all over come to pay their homage to lord Shiva.

The place where his javelin pierced the earth become the base camp of the guru and is known as Jhanda Saheb. His seat is still here and a Mahant ji is the head of the Gurudwara. Every year a fair is held here known as Jhanda Mela on the fifth day of Holi- a festival of colors.
